President Trump just dropped the hammer on Ilhan Omar and told her to resign immediately because court papers listed her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar. He said she used a fake name to get elected and sworn in, and that her real last name matches the guy people have been saying for years is her brother. Democrats are clutching their pearls, but the raid on her DC home last week already had the whole town talking.
Omar's people called it completely false and said Ilhan Omar is her real name. Sure. The filing from the U.S. Attorney's office doesn't explain why they used the other name, but Trump ran with it at his Iowa rally. He pointed out the brother marriage allegation she's denied for years and said if she got sworn in under the wrong name, she can't stay in Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson probably just sighed and ordered another coffee.
This comes right after Omar told MS NOW she has to move out of her DC place because the raid made her address public and she gets death threats. Agents showed up at 6 a.m., banged on the doors, searched for hours, and took phones, notebooks, a camera, and some Somali kids' book. She said it freaked everyone out, including her husband and adult son who were home. She insists she did nothing wrong and that this is all Trump weaponizing the government against political enemies.
Here's the thing. Omar has spent years calling America racist, accusing Israel of genocide, and defending people who want open borders. Now that the feds are looking at her immigration paperwork from when she was a kid, she's suddenly the victim of a witch hunt. The same party that spent four years calling every Trump investigation legitimate is now shocked that investigations happen. Shocked, I tell you.
The brother marriage thing has floated around forever. She said "not to my knowledge" when asked if she married her brother, which is a hell of a way to not deny something. Trump latched onto that and the name discrepancy and declared the seat basically vacated. Whether any of it holds up in court is above my pay grade, but the optics are terrible for a party that lectures everyone else about transparency and the rule of law.
Omar says she's confident she didn't do anything wrong and that she's designed by God to withstand this. Fine. But when your home gets searched, your name shows up different in filings, and the president is calling for your resignation on the campaign trail, maybe the story isn't "Trump is mean." Maybe it's that the woman who represents Minneapolis has some explaining to do about how she got here and who she married.
Democrats will scream that this is election interference with the midterms weeks away. They said the same thing every time something happened to one of their own. Meanwhile, ordinary people look at the raid, the name, the old allegations, and the nonstop anti-American rhetoric and wonder why anyone is surprised. If the investigation is baseless, prove it. If it's not, then the resignation talk might be the least of her problems.
Either way, the midterms just got a little more interesting. Omar is expected to win her deep-blue district anyway, but the national party has to keep carrying this baggage while they pretend everything is fine. Trump is campaigning every day. Omar is looking for a new apartment. And the rest of us are just watching the circus.
