Stop the presses, or at least slow them down to a light jog: the Cook Political Report has decided the midterms are over, and it would like Republicans to please exit through the gift shop.
On Oct. 23, Cook's Erin Covey shifted 19 House races toward Democrats, as reported by The Hill and the Washington Examiner, declaring that the GOP's path to keeping the House has "all but evaporated." Six races moved from Toss Up to Lean Democrat, including four held by Republicans: Juan Ciscomani in Arizona, Gabe Evans in Colorado, Jen Kiggans in Virginia, and Derrick Van Orden in Wisconsin. Two open GOP-held seats, Kentucky's 6th and Texas's 35th, slid from Lean Republican to Toss Up. Even Lauren Boebert's seat got nudged from Solid R to Lean R, which in pundit-speak is like a weatherman saying "light drizzle" during a hurricane.
By Cook's math, Democrats are now favored in 218 seats, Republicans in 198, with 17 toss-ups, and the likeliest outcome is a Democratic pickup of 12 to 22 seats. The election is Nov. 3. Cook cites new polling and ad spending.
Now, Contrarian Crow is not here to tell you the numbers are fake. The numbers are real numbers. They are printed in a real report by real people who own real tweed. I'm here to tell you something more important: a forecast is just a horoscope with a spreadsheet.
These are the same professional predictors who have spent years confidently telling America what's about to happen, right up until America does something else. Every cycle, the crystal ball comes out of the closet, gets a fresh coat of Windex, and somebody in a cardigan announces the future with the calm confidence of a man who will never, ever have to give the money back.
Here's how a race rating actually works. Step one: look at polls. Step two: look at who's buying more TV ads. Step three: lean back in your chair, stroke your chin, and say "Lean D" in a voice like you're ordering wine. Step four: if you're wrong, move it to "Toss Up" two weeks later and call it nuance.
And let's be honest with ourselves, Republicans. If your path "all but evaporated," maybe stop leaving it out in the sun. A party that can't hold Lean seats with 11 days to go needs less consultant-speak and more door knocking. The forecasters aren't your enemy. Complacency is. The forecast is just the guy at the bar telling you you're going to lose the fight before you've even taken your jacket off.
So here's the Crow's official prediction, which carries exactly the same legal weight as Cook's: the race is over when the votes are counted, not when a guy with a laser pointer and a blue map says so. Until then, ratings are vibes, polls are vibes, and the only number that matters is the one on Nov. 3.
Put down the forecast. Pick up a clipboard. Go knock on a door. Worst case, you meet a nice dog.
