PARIS — Emmanuel Macron would like the world to know that calling France a country on fire is "stupid." He said this, in fairness, while deploying 70,000 police officers, helicopters, armored vehicles and water cannons to keep France from catching fire again this weekend.

Very French. Deny the smoke, call the fire department.

Here's what actually happened. At a midterms rally Monday, President Trump said France is "being conquered, looted and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists and communists." On Wednesday Macron fired back that "foreign leaders," Trump "among others," had made "unacceptable and stupid comments," and blamed "foreign manipulation of information," including AI-generated images of things that never happened. On Friday the State Department told Fox News Digital that Trump is "spot on," which is diplomat-speak for "we've seen the footage, Manu."

And the footage is a lot. French officials say more than 3,000 shops were looted last weekend and about 2,500 people were taken into custody. Macron himself called it "political and seditious acts by ultra-left groups whose aim is to bring down the Republic." His own interior minister admitted police "lost control." So to recap the official French position: the riots were real, the looting was real, the leftist mobs were real, the lost control was real, but anyone who mentions it out loud is stupid. That's not a press strategy. It's a hostage video with better tailoring.

Now look at the weekend plan. Macron has banned protests by anyone "with no legitimate authority" and said, "the general recommendation is that there should be no demonstrations in the coming days." In France. The country that treats protesting like a national sport. Telling the French not to protest is like telling a Frenchman not to have opinions about cheese. You'll get a protest about the ban by noon.

The Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay will be closed Saturday. Twenty-four Metro stations will be shut. Paris Saint-Germain versus Lyon got bumped from Sunday to Monday night. Macron even canceled a trip to Nigeria and Senegal. When the president of France would rather stay home than go anywhere warm, you know the situation is grim. That man has never skipped a photo op in his life.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports the national student union UNEF says its rallies are going ahead anyway, permit or no permit, and the Yellow Vests had their request denied too. So the plan is simple: 70,000 cops versus a bunch of philosophy majors who just found out they can skip class for the revolution.

The Demorat reached out to the Élysée Palace for comment and received what we can only describe as an absurd parody statement: "France is not burning. France is simply experiencing a very warm, very angry autumn, sponsored by the ultra-left. Anyone who says otherwise is stupid, and also, please stay away from Paris this weekend."

Here's the thing, Manu. When your own police union says the state "abandons its police officers," when businesses in central Paris are boarding up their windows, and when your best defense is that some of the riot pictures online were fake, you don't get to call the guy across the ocean stupid. You're the one buying plywood in bulk.

Trump called France a "once great nation." Macron answered by locking the Louvre, bumping soccer and rolling out the water cannons. He's making Trump's argument for him, one armored vehicle at a time.
