Down at the diner this morning, Earl set his coffee down and asked the question everybody in New York should be asking. "How come the only racial equity deadline City Hall can hit is the one for firing the racial equity lady?"

Earl's a made-up fella, but the question's real, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani walked right into it.

Here's how it went, folks. New York City has a Commission on Racial Equity. Voters created it by ballot measure in 2022, and its job is to hold City Hall accountable. City Hall was supposed to produce a racial equity plan by a legal deadline. It didn't, under Eric Adams or Mamdani, and a judge ruled in August that both broke the law by missing it. Then, per the New York Times, the administration's draft trimmed several references to diversity, equity and inclusion to avoid poking the Trump administration. Then the administration appealed the ruling.

The commission's chair, Linda Tigani, has been saying all of that out loud, which turns out to be the one thing you can't do in a progressive city government: your actual job.

So on Tuesday, Mamdani proposed replacing her with Christopher Alexander of the NAACP New York State Conference. He thanked her for her service and didn't say why. Where I come from, that's what you say right before you change the locks.

It did not go well. The City Council's Black, Latino and Asian Caucus, nearly 70 percent of the Council per the Times, wrote him asking to keep her. Faith leaders spoke up. Supporters rallied on the City Hall steps Wednesday with signs reading "Stand up to Zohran." That's a sign I never expected to see held by the left. That's like seeing a sign at a Packers game that says "Cheese Is Overrated."

Tigani summed it up better than Earl could. "You are willing to undermine the independence of CORE by deciding that the only deadline for racial equity that you will abide by is the removal of the chair and executive director." Folks, that's not a quote. That's a eulogy with a timeline.

So Wednesday, the mayor blinked. Sort of. He said her term, which actually ran out in July, gets extended to next summer, and then he still plans to swap her out. That's not backing down. That's a breakup text with a scheduled send time. "We're excited to work with the same council to put forward Christopher Alexander as the next commissioner," the mayor said, which is the polite way of saying the moving truck is booked, just for July.

Now, I'm a simple man. I eat the same eggs every Tuesday. But here's how I see it. When you run as the guy who's going to shake up the establishment, and the first person you shake loose is the independent watchdog grading your homework, you didn't beat the system. You just found the eraser.

Every politician says they love accountability. Mamdani loves it too. He just likes it the way I like my coffee, extended, delayed, and ready to be replaced next summer.

Earl says he's tipping extra this week. Somebody in this city ought to be holding up their end of a deal.
