It is time we started respecting the economy for who it truly is — or rather, who it truly was.

For years, we have referred to the economy in the present tense, as though it were still around. That is not only inaccurate, it is hurtful. After a long period of reflection, I have come to understand that the economy identifies as something that used to exist, and I will be using the pronouns "was" and "were" going forward.

Some will say this is unnecessary. To them I say: look at your 401(k). Then look me in the eye and tell me the economy "is" anything.

I encourage readers to join me in using the economy's preferred pronouns at the dinner table, at work, and especially in front of anyone who tells you it is "actually doing great."
