I'll say it, and you're going to hate it: Darializa Avila Chevalier is right. Then she proves herself wrong in the next sentence, and I respect that too. Efficiency is rare in Congress.

Avila Chevalier is the Democratic nominee in New York's 13th District. She beat five-term Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the June primary, and she's all but guaranteed a seat. On Politico's "The Conversation" with Dasha Burns, in a clip making the rounds on X this week, she said Democratic socialists are winning blue districts because they're "actually presenting a vision." It's "no longer just, oh, the Republicans are bad," she said.

Then she continued: "Yes, the Republicans are bad."

Everybody else will tell you that's a contradiction. They're wrong. It's a sequel. Part one was "Republicans are bad." Part two is "Republicans are bad, and also, here's what we want." Hollywood has made billions this way.

So what's in part two? She listed health care, child care, housing and ending wars. Specifically, single-payer health care, "in the richest country in the history of the earth." When people call that unrealistic, she said, "it's actually what most Americans want, Republicans and Democrats alike."

Now, you're thinking I'm going to dunk on single-payer. I'm not. I'm going to dunk on you, for thinking a plan is the same thing as a list of nouns. Health care, child care, housing. That's not a platform. That's the "household" category in a grocery store app.

She also complained that establishment Democrats give voters "a lot of, like, word salad." I couldn't agree more. And then I reread the transcript, and the phrase "a vision for how do we move forward" appears more than once in about a minute. That's not salad. That's the croutons.

The establishment will say she's a threat. The left will say she's a hero. I say she's the most honest Democrat in America, because she accidentally confirmed what Republicans have said for years. The party's message has been "Republicans are bad," and now even its own nominees are tired of hearing it. When the new kids roll their eyes at your slogan, the slogan's done.

Here's the part where I argue with the conservative reader, too. Don't celebrate yet. She's not proposing less. She's proposing more, with a better attitude. Politico also reported that neither she nor fellow incoming leftist Melat Kiros would commit to backing Hakeem Jeffries as Democratic leader. That's not a moderate pivot. That's a new management team with bigger ideas.

So yes, she's right that "Republicans are bad" isn't a plan. And no, "free stuff for everyone, paid for by the richest country in the history of the earth" isn't one either. It's just a nicer font.

Somewhere in Washington Heights, a voter just wants the bus to come on time. She got a vision. She'll take the bus.
