Democrats won the House on Tuesday night by telling voters they would lower the price of groceries. By Wednesday morning the incoming Oversight chairman had narrowed the agenda down to one item, and it bills by the hour.
"LAWYER UP," Rep. Robert Garcia of California posted on X, in capital letters, as the results came in. His office then put out an official statement. The full text of the official statement was "Lawyer up."
That's it. Two words. The man has a staff, a letterhead and a press shop, and they produced a document shorter than a fortune cookie. Somewhere a communications director billed eight hours for the period.
Garcia did elaborate elsewhere. He said the new majority would go after corporate corruption, DHS and ICE abuses, the Epstein files cover-up and what he calls the Trump family's corruption. Notice what didn't make the list. Eggs. Rent. That thing where your electric bill now has a second electric bill inside it.
He was not alone. Sen. Ron Wyden also posted one word on X: "Subpoenas." Rep. Delia Ramirez went a little longer, posting, "Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what's up? Clear your schedule."
So the party that spent eighteen months promising to clear your grocery bill has instead cleared somebody else's calendar. Congratulations, America. You voted for relief and got a deposition schedule.
To be fair, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries did list actual policy. He said Democrats would focus on reversing Medicaid cuts, extending the Affordable Care Act credits, restoring Congress's authority over tariffs and stopping the Iran war. That's four kitchen-table items. Garcia's statement had zero kitchen-table items and two words. You can tell which one the base actually read.
NBC News projects Democrats will hold about 255 House seats when the new majority is sworn in on Jan. 3. That's a big win, and it came with a big mandate. Specifically, a mandate to order a lot of paper.
Think about the voter in Bakersfield who pulled the lever because a pound of ground beef costs more than a movie ticket. She woke up Wednesday, checked her phone, and the first thing the winners said to her was "Lawyer up." She doesn't have a lawyer. She has a coupon app and a car that makes a noise.
The trial bar, meanwhile, had the best election night in its history. Every white-shoe firm in Washington is now treating Jan. 3 like Black Friday. Partners who haven't left the golf course since 2019 are dusting off their good briefcases.
Here is the part nobody in the victory lounge wants to hear. Subpoenas are not a grocery policy. You cannot eat a deposition. You can't put a contempt referral in the gas tank, although at California prices it would probably go farther than a gallon of regular.
Democrats ran as the party of your household budget, and they won. Then, before the confetti hit the floor, they announced the household they're actually worried about is the one in the White House.
Two words, Congressman. You could have said "Cheaper eggs." It's the same length.
