Pramila Jayapal just told a room full of Washington State Democrats the quiet part with a megaphone and a gavel fantasy.
She expects to chair the House Immigration Subcommittee. Then she said "every single one of these corrupt people that kidnapped, and detained, and deported, and killed people in the streets" will "come before us," and that "we are going to send them to prison."
Prison. For ICE agents. For enforcing the immigration statutes Congress wrote, funded, and then pretended not to recognize at the next fundraiser.
Voters spent Tuesday screaming about grocery prices. Jayapal spent the victory lap designing orange jumpsuits for the people who remove illegal aliens. Affordability for thee. A hearing room for me. Somewhere a swing-district Democrat is still holding a "lower costs" sign and wondering when the party switched from eggs to extradition.
She has also said she plans to "haul all of these people before my committee with subpoenas, demand accountability." Haul. Subpoenas. Accountability. That is progressive for "I saw a clip, I hated the clip, now the officer's calendar belongs to me."
On Oct. 29, Jayapal and Jamie Raskin sent a letter to DHS demanding answers on CBP and ICE officers involved in shootings. Oversight is fine. Oversight is Congress's job. Promising prison from a subcommittee dais is not oversight. It is cosplay with contempt power and a mailing list.
Here's the part they skip in the applause line. Congress can investigate. Congress can hold hearings. Congress can refer cases to prosecutors. Congress cannot itself imprison federal officers for carrying out federal law. That remains a Justice Department decision, a courtroom decision, an evidence decision. Jayapal skipped the middle and went straight to the sentence. Efficiency!
Critics noted the obvious: neither Jayapal nor Rashida Tlaib has the unilateral power to lock up immigration officers for doing the job written into statute. The base heard "prison" anyway. The base always hears "prison." The Constitution heard a standup set.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the caucus is "relentlessly focused on affordability and on accountability." Relentlessly. That is Jeffries for "we will put rent on the flyer and ICE on the calendar." Relentless focus looks a lot like a bait-and-switch with better lighting.
Remy has a tip for the agents who thought Tuesday was about eggs: update your LinkedIn. The new majority just announced the first hearing is you. Bring a lawyer. Bring a lunch. Bring the statute book they wrote, because they are about to act shocked it exists.
And spare me the translation games. "Kidnapped" is what Jayapal calls detention. "Corrupt" is what she calls enforcement. "Prison" is what she calls a standing ovation. When Democrats win on prices and lead with punishing border officers, that is not a pivot. That is the product.
So congratulations, America. You asked for cheaper groceries. You got a subcommittee chair auditioning as warden for the people who still believe immigration law is not a suggestion. That is not accountability. That is a show trial with better catering and worse civics.
